Premier Technical Services Group Ltd (PTSG), through its specialist high-level access company Pendrich Height Services, has completed urgent remedial works to secure the roof of the Balmoral Hotel in Edinburgh.
Located on Princes Street in the heart of the capital and just below Edinburgh Castle, the Balmoral Hotel is a renowned Victorian building with Scottish baronial architectural influences. It has held Category B listed status since 1994 and was known for much of the 20th century as the North British Hotel.
Following stormy weather, part of the lead covering on the hotel’s distinctive clock tower became dislodged, presenting an immediate hazard to the public below. Pendrich quickly mobilised a team of steeplejacks and rope access technicians to respond to the emergency.
A bespoke access platform was erected to encapsulate the damaged area and ensure public safety. Pendrich’s experienced lead workers removed and re- formed the lead sheeting in line with the original profile, preserving the historic character of the building.
The use of specialist steeplejack and rope access techniques proved highly efficient and cost-effective, eliminating the need for extensive scaffolding or street closures. A cost analysis demonstrated significant savings for the client.
The project highlights PTSG’s ability to deliver rapid, safe and sensitive interventions on heritage buildings in challenging environments.
