Kier secures place on United Utilities £205m Reservoir Works Framework

Kier has been appointed to United Utilities’ Reservoir Works Framework, supporting the delivery of vital improvements and maintenance across the North West as part of the company’s AMP8 investment programme.

The framework will operate for an initial five-year period, with the possibility of extending to 2035. The work carried out will support United Utilities in its vital work to maintain water security and safeguard communities from the effects of climate change.

The framework is divided into two lots with an estimated total value of £205 million. Lot 1 (c.£80m) includes reservoir improvements and maintenance, while Lot 2 (c.£125m) involves special ground improvements for reservoirs. Kier will handle construction delivery, design of temporary works, and carbon reporting, working collaboratively with United Utilities and its partners to deliver safe, sustainable, and efficient solutions.

As part of the framework, Kier will bring its expertise in complex civil engineering and regulated water projects to deliver a wide range of activities, including spillway upgrades, embankment strengthening and ground improvement works. The company will also support United Utilities’ commitment to reducing carbon emissions by providing data for whole-life carbon assessments and identifying opportunities for low-carbon materials and construction methods.

The framework will also generate significant social value benefits. Kier will collaborate with local communities to create employment and training opportunities, support apprenticeships, and engage with schools and colleges to promote careers in construction and engineering. The company will also prioritise engaging with the local supply chain to maximise regional economic benefits.

Andrew Bradshaw, Group Managing Director at Kier Natural Resources, Nuclear & Networks, said: “This highlights our commitment to supporting the water sector’s pursuit of resilience and sustainability. We look forward to working collaboratively with United Utilities to implement vital improvements that safeguard communities, protect the environment, and create lasting social value across the north west.

We’re proud to be working with United Utilities across both water treatment and reservoir assets, delivering a unique approach to water management. This partnership strategically positions Kier’s natural resources expertise to tackle the challenges facing the UK’s water sector.”

Eddie Quinn, Managing Director – Environment at Kier Natural Resources, Nuclear & Networks, said: “We are pleased to have secured a place on United Utilities’ Reservoir Works Framework. This appointment demonstrates the trust our clients place in Kier Natural Resources, Nuclear & Networks to deliver complex and critical infrastructure maintenance, repairs, and upgrades.”

Jane Simpson, Commercial Engineering and Capital Delivery Director for United Utilities, said: “Our reservoirs are critical for keeping customers’ taps flowing across the North West as well as being iconic sites that many people enjoy visiting.

The eight partners we have chosen will bring great expertise to help ensure we can maintain these reservoirs and provide our customers with the great quality drinking water they expect.”

This award further reinforces Kier’s position as a key delivery partner in the UK water sector, following recent AMP8 contract wins and renewals with Yorkshire Water, Wessex Water, Southern Water, Anglian Water and Severn Trent.
