The National Federation of Roofing Contractors (NFRC), in collaboration with FASET (Fall Arrest Safety Equipment Training), has released a crucial safety alert addressing significant concerns regarding non-compliant safety netting practices in the construction industry.
Instances have been reported by NFRC members where horizontal drainage installations precede safety netting setup. As a result, safety nets are positioned well below the recommended two-meter threshold, compromising safety and pushing net riggers to operate under conditions that diverge from FASET’s installation guidelines.
Further insights into FASET’s guidance on the optimal clearance distance for safety nets can be found here.
As the authoritative trade association for safety net rigging and temporary safety measures, FASET leverages the expertise of its member organisations to strengthen the industry’s collective voice. FASET promotes engagement with other associations and channels its members’ feedback and expertise, enhancing safety standards across industries.
The new safety alert aims to enlighten and encourage a reassessment of existing safety netting practices among roofing and principal contractors.
FASET’s Managing Director, Tony Seddon, emphasises, “This safety alert is intended to highlight the correct phasing of installation works to reduce the risks associated with non-compliant practices. Adhering to FASET guidance, safety nets should be installed as near as possible to the work area, definitely within a 2-meter distance.”
Mr. Seddon elaborates, “This initiative underlines the necessity for all stakeholders in safety netting, particularly roofing and principal contractors, to engage proactively with FASET and the guidance we make available via our website. Participation in FASET membership offers valuable access to FASET events, including the AGM, promoting an inclusive platform for knowledge and experience exchange within the construction sector. Such engagement significantly diminishes the likelihood of non-compliance incidents like those mentioned.”
Contractors and principal contractors are urged to consult the comprehensive safety alert by the NFRC and explore the referenced guidelines and resources for in-depth information on safety net installation and compliance. You can view the safety alert here.
Tony Seddon further stresses the value of engagement, “If you require the installation of height safety systems, engaging with a FASET member is highly beneficial. Membership demonstrates, through a rigorous audit process, that members comply with industry best practice, creating a safer work environment. Ultimately, it contributes to the paramount goal: ensuring the safety and well-being of everyone, so all can return home safely after work.”
