Construction firm switches Manchester market to solar with landmark installation

A forward-thinking North-West construction company has completed a landmark installation to switch a Manchester market to solar power.

Evolution, which operates across the North of England from its Blackpool base, has installed 585 solar panels on the roof of Gorton Market – and completed the job two weeks ahead of schedule.

The panels will deliver 249 kilowatts of solar power, saving on energy bills as well as protecting the environment.

Led by Managing Director JJ Fitzgerald, Evolution’s vision is to have a positive impact on people, places and the planet.

JJ said: “Sustainability and finding new ways of working to leave positive impacts on communities is what drives us as a business. This is a project we are particularly proud of.

“This investment in clean, green electricity will significantly reduce carbon emissions and help create a more sustainable future for the community.

“By generating renewable energy on-site, Gorton Market can lower electricity bills, making operations more cost-efficient while supporting environmental goals.

“We thank our valued partners Warden, the main contractor on this project, for their collaboration and support.

“A huge thank you also to all our team at Evolution for their hard work, expertise and dedication to delivering this quality job on budget, and ahead of schedule.”

Gorton Market is a statement project for Evolution as it looks to expand the renewables division of its business.

JJ said: “We have always built our business on our reputation for delivering quality on time and on budget.

“With this project people will be able to see that we apply the same standards and the same ethos to the solar side of our business, and we look forward to delivering for even more satisfied customers.”

Evolution has already switched its Blackpool base to solar power to ensure its headquarters are energy self-sufficient.

The company’s own team fitted 46 photovoltaic panels to the roof of its offices at Blackpool Airport Enterprise Zone.

The panels provide enough energy to power Evolution’s offices, which host 12 members of staff, as well as its fleet of electric vehicles.

Evolution is also well-known for its community-minded approach. Next week the business is a finalist for the Social Impact Award in Insider’s Lancashire Property Awards 2025 which take place on Thursday, November 13 at the Winter Gardens, Blackpool.
