NSS launches CPD-accredited drainage training in line with updated British Standard

Facilities professionals across the UK can now access a new CPD-accredited training programme designed to support compliance with the updated BS 8490:2025 standard on siphonic drainage.

Developed by NSS, part of Premier Technical Services Group Ltd (PTSG), the training addresses the growing need for specialist knowledge following regulatory changes that could affect up to 60% of UK commercial buildings—particularly those with internal gutters built before 2000.

The course, delivered by Billy Gordon, Head of Siphonic Drainage at NSS and a member of the Siphonic Roof Drainage Association (SRDA), offers in-depth guidance on key areas including:

  • Regulatory compliance
  • Risk assessments
  • Upgrade planning
  • Practical case studies

The changes to BS 8490 reflect an increase in rainfall intensity linked to climate change, with dual drainage systems (primary and secondary) now becoming a standard requirement. The training helps facilities teams understand what these changes mean for their estates—and how to act.

Available for delivery nationwide, the programme offers both compliance insight and Continuing Professional Development (CPD) credits, supporting ongoing learning across FM teams. Garry Boyce of SAUR Services Glasgow described the course as “incredibly worthwhile.”

With severe weather events on the rise, NSS’s training provides FM professionals with the tools they need to ensure drainage systems remain safe, effective and compliant in the years ahead.
