Mitie has been awarded five stars by the British Safety Council demonstrating Mitie’s commitment to implementing the highest health and safety standards across its business.
With its people-first approach, the British Safety Council’s Occupational Health and Safety audit, found that Mitie cultivates a strong and progressive culture around health and safety, supported by committed leadership, consistent training and communication channels through its Live Safe programme, and data-driven systems to monitor and evaluate safety procedures. Ranking as “excellent”, the report outlined how Mitie promotes transparency through colleague involvement and feedback pathways.
Mitie is the largest facilities management employer to be awarded five stars across the entire group, following an in-depth examination under British Safety Council’s 2025 specification, which scores on the maturity of the health and safety management systems in place. This reflects Mitie’s leadership in setting a benchmark for the industry to adopt health and safety best practice, including industry-leading compliance tools to meet UK legislation. With 84,000 colleagues working across the country in roles from engineering and hygiene to security and compliance, every day and every job at Mitie is underpinned by its mission to embed safety into all aspects of its business.
Key findings from the audit include:
- High workplace standards: Sites were found to be clean, well-managed, and compliant with workplace welfare, food safety protocols, and regulatory requirements. Mitie also fosters a positive reporting culture for hazards alongside structured governance forums
- Clear Health and Wellbeing strategy: Colleague health and wellbeing is supported by effective policies around workplace pressure, financial wellbeing support, and targeted resources for neurodiverse colleagues, helping to boost workplace resilience
- Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion promotion: Through awareness campaigns and inclusive practices, Mitie creates an environment that champions and celebrates colleagues’ differences
- Priority road-place safety: With its fleet of 6,400 vehicles, ensuring the safety of the drivers and others on the road is a priority for Mitie. Colleagues are provided with a driving-for-work programme, with all drivers receiving competency-based, AI-enhanced training.
The five-star award follows a comprehensive and robust audit including documentation reviews, interviews with senior management, colleagues and stakeholders, and observing operations across Mitie sites in sectors including defence systems, aviation, waste management, healthcare, retail and security. The audit was then measured against key health and safety management best practice indicators including leadership and commitment, stakeholder engagement, risk management, organisational Occupational Health and Safety culture, and continual improvement.
