Kier to deliver four key health developments to improve patient care on the Isle of Wight

Kier has been appointed by the Isle of Wight NHS Trust to deliver four key projects to improve the Island’s NHS services.

As part of the Trust’s £22m investment in their capital development programme, the current infrastructure and estate at St Mary’s Hospital will be redeveloped and improved. Kier will deliver:

  • Project A – an integrated mental health and community hub in Newport High Street, providing treatment and talking therapy rooms, and tele-hubs for telemedicine appointments.
  • Project B – a high dependency care unit at St Mary’s Hospital, to improve patient flow and increase the hospital’s capacity to provide specialists services.
  • Project C – an emergency care floor at St Mary’s Hospital, co-locating the existing emergency department, urgent treatment centre and short stay facilities, improving treatment room size and access to diagnostics.
  • Project D – acute bed reconfiguration at St Mary’s Hospital, providing a new 18-bed acute ward enabling better use of beds and the separation of planned and emergency impatient care.
The improvements will allow the Trust to develop hot (acute or non-elective) and cold (planned care or elective) zones with shared services to manage admissions more quickly, as well as increasing the hospital’s capacity to deal with emergencies and provide a broader range of elective services.

David McKenzie, managing director for Kier Construction, London and Southern, said: “This is a project that will transform healthcare on the Isle of Wight. We’re proud to continue our work for the Trust, delivering outstanding healthcare facilities for the people of Newport.

“During the project we’ll also provide wider social benefits to the community by offering work placements and apprenticeships, volunteering at the hospital and local charities, and engaging with local schools.”

Deputy Director of Estates and Facilities, Rob Graham, said: “We are delighted to be working with Kier to deliver the first phase of our Investing in Our Future investment programme. The four projects will enable our hospital and community services to provide high quality and sustainable care to our community in new and improved facilities ”

This appointment continues Kier’s long standing successful relationship with the Trust, having delivered various projects at St Mary’s Hospital over the past 11 years. This includes multiple refurbishment projects, such as the Pathology Unit and dementia-friendly wards and the reconfiguration and refurbishment of the emergency department.
