PTSG Completes Stonework Repairs on 16th Century Edinburgh Landmark

Premier Technical Services Group Ltd (PTSG), through its Pendrich Height Services division, has finished specialist restoration work on a historic venue located on Edinburgh’s famous Royal Mile.

The project involved The Tolbooth Tavern, housed within the original Canongate Tolbooth structure dating back to 1591. The medieval edifice originally served as a toll collection point for those entering the burgh at Canongate, with its ground level transitioning into tavern use in 1820.

oday, the establishment operates as an authentic Scottish public house occupying a sought-after position on the Royal Mile. Despite its compact street-facing appearance, the interior features an expansive bar area plus mezzanine-level dining space. Patrons can enjoy traditional Scottish beers, single malt spirits and craft gins alongside freshly prepared regional cuisine made with ingredients sourced from local suppliers.

Pendrich’s technical team was commissioned after inspections revealed unstable stonework on the tavern’s exterior. Given the substantial pedestrian traffic from visitors along Edinburgh’s Royal Mile, customised scaffolding was erected reaching the building’s uppermost architectural features. This approach eliminated disruption to the public whilst addressing what could have developed into a serious safety concern.

Pendrich operates as part of PTSG Building Access Specialists Ltd, one of five independent operating divisions within the Group. The division’s skilled personnel deliver comprehensive maintenance, restoration and aesthetic enhancement services across all categories of structures throughout the built environment – keeping them operationally sound and visually appealing.
