Wates continues 19-year partnership with Hertfordshire County Council with £4.5m contract

Wates Group has been reappointed by Hertfordshire County Council to deliver a range of planned, reactive, and minor works across the Council’s vast property portfolio.

The new £4.5 million contract, valued at £1.5 million annually, will see Wates manage maintenance needs for over 1,025 buildings, including libraries, fire stations, schools, and public green spaces.

This contract marks the 19th year of successful collaboration between Wates and Hertfordshire County Council. Wates will utilize a team of directly employed operatives and subcontractors to deliver a planned preventative maintenance approach for the Council’s 83 main buildings and a reactive service for the remaining estate.

Richard Ward, Divisional Director for Wates, said: “We look forward to continuing our long association with Hertfordshire County Council, helping them ensure the continued safety of their buildings and the people that use them.

“We have a longstanding and shared commitment to providing better solutions for our clients. Our commitment extends beyond the delivery of the contract requirements, reflecting their dedication to sustainable operations and the delivery of social value.”

The contract includes commitments to social value creation, such as employing a local apprentice and offering annual work experience opportunities. Wates will also focus on driving efficiencies by utilizing local supply chains and implementing streamlined payment processes.

Looking towards the future, Wates plans to introduce new sustainability initiatives into the project. This includes incorporating electric vehicles into the contract operations, promoting material recycling, and leveraging the Wates Innovation Network – a platform for identifying and implementing sustainable building solutions – to benefit the Council’s entire property portfolio.

Sass Pledger, Director of Property at Hertfordshire County Council, said: “Following a thorough tendering process, Hertfordshire County Council are pleased to announce that we have offered a Measured Term Contract for Build Services of three years, with an extension option of a further two years, to Wates.

The contract is expected to include a range of initiatives including employment for a local apprentice, annual work experience opportunities, and a year-on-year uplift in performance targets, enabling the use of local supply chains and efficient payment processes, aimed at saving costs. We very much look forward to working with the Wates team on future building projects.”
