Hall & Kay Launches Water Mist Fire Protection Solution

Hall & Kay has launched a new water mist fire protection solution, expanding its suppression capabilities with technology suited to environments where traditional approaches may not always be practical.

The launch strengthens Hall & Kay’s ability to support customers across a range of environments where space constraints, water supply limitations, asset sensitivity or specific fire engineering requirements make water mist a more effective solution.

Water mist systems use ultra-fine droplets to suppress fires through rapid cooling and oxygen displacement. Unlike traditional sprinkler systems, water mist technology uses significantly smaller droplets – typically between 50 and 300 microns – enabling efficient fire suppression while using less water. The systems are designed to absorb heat rapidly, with water expanding significantly when converted to steam, helping to cool the fire and reduce oxygen levels around it.

By requiring significantly less water than conventional suppression systems, the compact nature of water mist systems can also reduce the amount of infrastructure required to deliver effective fire suppression. Smaller pipework and system components can provide greater flexibility during design and installation, particularly in retrofit projects and complex building environments, potentially helping building owners on lowering both material costs and embodied carbon.

Hall & Kay’s new service reflects growing market interest in water mist systems as building owners and developers seek solutions that balance fire protection performance with operational resilience and design flexibility. The business will provide customers with support across design, installation, testing and maintenance, underpinned by compliance with relevant water mist standards and fire test protocols.

Water mist systems by application specific testing and certification requirements, making design and specification critical. Through their strategic partnership with Aquasys, a global leader in high-pressure water mist technology, Hall & Kay’s approach is centred around manufacturer-approved Design, Installation, Operation and Maintenance (DIOM) guidance, ensuring systems are installed in line with validated fire test performance.

Richard King, Managing Director of Hall & Kay, said: “Water mist technology continues to gain traction across the built environment as customers look for effective fire suppression solutions that can support increasingly complex building requirements. This launch allows us to provide customers with a solution that combines technical performance and tested standards compliance with design flexibility, while supporting applications where traditional suppression approaches may not always be suitable.”

Hall & Kay’s water mist solution is supported by recognised fire testing methodologies and standards associated with water mist applications, helping customers navigate what remains a developing and highly specialised area of fire protection.

Water mist systems are increasingly being considered across sectors including commercial buildings, heritage environments, infrastructure, residential developments and specialist risk applications where reduced water usage, lower storage requirements or minimised disruption are important considerations.

Hall & Kay provides fire protection, suppression and life safety solutions across the UK, supporting customers with the design, installation and maintenance of fire systems across a range of sectors.
