Sodexo’s team at Wythenshawe Hospital crowned best in sector at International Safety Awards

Sodexo’s Health & Care team at Wythenshawe Hospital has achieved double recognition at the British Safety Council’s 2025 International Safety Awards, securing a distinction and being named the overall winner in the Health and Social Care category.

Now in its 67th year, the International Safety Awards celebrate organisations around the world that demonstrate a strong commitment to preventing workplace injuries and ill health. The awards also recognise those that prioritise employee wellbeing and mental health in the workplace.

The Sodexo team at Wythenshawe Hospital received a distinction for its entry which stood out among entrants in the Health and Social Care sector not only meeting rigorous health and safety standards but also demonstrating a comprehensive and forward-thinking approach to risk management, employee engagement, and wellbeing.

The award submission highlighted the team’s efforts to involve all colleagues in shaping its safety culture. This included reintroducing the site’s Health & Safety Committee, increasing use of digital reporting tools such as the Salus app, and recognising outstanding safety behaviours through initiatives like monthly awards.

Senior leadership within the team also played a vital role, undertaking extensive training in areas including incident investigation, mental health first aid, and Sodexo’s internal healthy and safety programme ensuring safety remains a visible, lived priority across the organisation.

Philip Leigh, CEO healthcare, Sodexo UK & Ireland said: “This award speaks volumes about the culture the team has built, one where safety is not a box to tick but a shared responsibility and everyday mindset. Their energy, collaboration, and attention to detail set a benchmark for what good looks like in our health and care. It shows what’s possible when colleagues feel empowered, and safety is embedded into how people think and work every single day.”

This latest accolade follows the team’s double win at the 2025 Safety & Health Excellence (SHE) Awards earlier this year, and the team’s 13th consecutive gold medal at the 2025 RoSPA awards resulting the team receiving the President’s Award for the third year, further underlining the site’s standout performance in health and safety leadership.
