PERI UK’s Terry Hall honoured as industry ‘Unsung Hero’ for championing national formwork safety standards

Terry Hall, field services manager for formwork and scaffolding specialist PERI UK, has been named ‘Unsung Hero’ at the CONSTRUCT Day 2025 awards. The award, presented by the UK industry trade body dedicated to the in-situ concrete frames sector, recognises Terry’s passion and commitment to improving site safety by establishing robust, accredited formwork training programmes.

A man on a mission

For years, a significant gap has existed between the highly regulated, mandatory training required for scaffolders and the training for operatives who erect formwork and falsework systems, often at great heights. Terry Hall has made it his mission to close this gap.

Drawing on three decades of industry experience, Terry developed course content from scratch, collaborated with the CITB to create a formal training blueprint, and successfully advocated for the new qualifications to be recognised on workers’ CSCS cards. Terry’s efforts have resulted in PERI UK becoming the only formwork supplier in the UK to offer these accredited qualifications through an official awarding body.

“It is a huge honour to receive this award, but the real goal is to drive industry-wide change,” said Terry. “In our industry, you can use complex, multi-tonne climbing systems without any formal, mandatory training. That simply isn’t right. This initiative is about giving operatives the skills and verified competence they need to work more safely and efficiently, which benefits the entire project.”

Delivering a new standard in safety and quality

The current industry standard for erecting formwork is often a basic NVQ Level 2, a qualification that has not kept pace with the evolution of modern, system-based formwork. Hall’s vision is to reach a point where, like in the scaffolding sector, individuals are not permitted to erect formwork systems without holding a recognised, formal qualification.

This proactive approach to safety and quality is a core part of PERI UK’s service. The accredited courses, which can be delivered on-site or at PERI’s training facility, complement the company’s extensive product portfolio and empower contractors to upskill their workforce. Over the last year alone, Hall has trained and upskilled over 120 individuals.

Ian Hayes, managing director of PERI UK added: “We are incredibly proud of Terry and this well-deserved recognition. His determination has not only enhanced our own service offering as a business but has laid the groundwork for a safer, more professional standard across the entire concrete structures industry. We believe that investing in accessible, high-quality training is fundamental to building a safer and more productive future for UK construction.”
