New CPD from Ecological Building Systems explains how to optimise building performance through the attic

Leading distributor of high performance and more natural building materials Ecological Building Systems has introduced a new CPD session that shows how to optimise building performance through attic design and detailing, focusing on airtightness insulation and high-quality hatch solutions.

The online CPD ‘Optimising Building Performance with Wellhöfer Airtight Insulated Attic Hatch Solutions’, which will be delivered as a live webinar on 3rd December, is aimed at professionals and homeowners who are keen to learn more about sustainable, energy efficient building practices.

The upcoming training will be led by Joe Fitzgerald and Fergal Flatley of Ecological Building Systems’ technical team, whose experience in building performance and natural materials brings strong practical depth to the session. They will be joined by Wellhöfer’s Research & Development Engineer, Erik Markert, whose specialist knowledge of high-performance attic hatch systems adds a valuable dimension to the programme. Ecological Building Systems is the exclusive distributor of Wellhöfer airtight attic hatches in the UK and Ireland, which has over 60 years’ expertise in attic hatch production.

Neil Turner, Technical Sales Manager at Ecological Building Systems, explains: “Attics can be draughty places and significant amounts of heat can be lost over the winter months if loft hatches are not insulated and properly sealed for airtightness. Through this online CPD, individuals can learn about effective airtightness detailing for attic/loft spaces as a way to protect the roof structure from the damaging effects of moisture, as well as unnecessary heat loss from a building.”

The online CPD will give attendees a greater knowledge of the thermal performance of building elements at openings to the building, including detailing for optimal performance and reduced heat loss through the ceiling level.  The CPD will also cover moisture protection for cold attic spaces and how heat and moisture escape through a poorly sealed ceiling can lead to damage to the structure of the building.

This CPD ‘Optimising Building Performance with Wellhöfer Airtight Insulated Attic Hatch Solutions’ lasts for 1.5 hours and provides one point towards maintaining professional standards.  As an open CPD with participants joining from different organisations, Ecological Building Systems is offering virtual design reviews on a one-to-one basis to discuss specific project requirements.

Attic hatches are essential as they serve as access points to the loft or roof space, allowing for installation and maintenance of various systems, such as insulation, ventilation and electrical wiring.  Air leakage through attic hatches from the loft to living spaces can also create draughts and contribute to condensation issues, which may result in poor indoor air quality and mould growth, leading to damage over time to the building finishes and, in severe cases, the fabric itself.

A Wellhöfer attic hatch can be enhancedwith ceiling components, such as airtight vapour control membranes and downlight protectors, to minimise the heat loss and moisture risks from poor attic detailing.Third party certified, these airtight attic hatches include an independent airtightness sealing system, which seals the frame to the surrounding timber joists, noggins or adjacent airtightness and vapour control layers.  This seal is kept intact by means of a pre-stressed spring which ensures the door remains airtight.

Ecological Building Systems is the exclusive distributor of Wellhöfer airtight attic hatches in the UK and Ireland. With more than 60 years of expertise in attic hatch production, Wellhöfer offers solutions suitable for all ceiling types in domestic and commercial buildings, making them ideal for both retrofit and new-build projects. The range includes multiple sizes and performance specifications, from insulated options for tighter spaces or specific certification requirements including fire rated hatches, to models designed for different budgets.

Ecological Building Systems is renowned for supplying a variety of natural materials to optimise building performance and durability.  Over the last few years, the business has grown significantly through supplying innovative, sustainable building materials, backed up by expert advice and product training.
