Mace completes redevelopment of historic former HSBC Private Bank HQ

Mace, the international construction and consultancy company, has completed the redevelopment of 78 St James’s Street.

Delivered by the Mace’s Commercial Offices and Residential division– for real estate investors, BentallGreenOak – the landmark project brings a suite of high-quality business facilities to this central London location.

The Grade II* listed 78 St James’s Street was formerly the headquarters of HSBC Private Bank.

Designed by architects Squire & Partners the redevelopment of this 19th-century building expands its use, incorporating not just premium workspaces but wellness facilities, multi-purpose areas including an event space, as well as a business lounge and outdoor terraces looking out over nearby Green Park.

Mace has retained the building’s impressive 1840s façade and lobby and created modern, adaptable spaces alongside areas with other heritage elements.

78 St James’s Street is Mace’s first project completed without the use of diesel. By introducing electric plant and machinery on site, the team saved over 5,550 kg CO2e during the build, in addition to reducing air pollution associated with combustion engines and lowering noise levels.

Features such as a rooftop pavilion social space and spa elevate 78 St James’s Street to a higher level. The project has been designed around the needs of users, providing basement car parking and electric vehicle charging points, as well as cycle storage and hotel-style shower facilities.

Ged Simmonds, Managing Director of Commercial Offices and Residential at Mace, explains: “78 St James’s Street presented us with the unique opportunity to deliver a building that seamlessly integrates its heritage with all the amenities of a modern workplace. The exceptional result is one which our team can be proud of, particularly as the construction raised the bar in sustainable delivery.’’
