Mears Living supports Manchester homelessness charity

A food collection by staff at a Manchester-based housing provider has provided much-needed support for a city homelessness charity.

The team at Mears Living based in Ardwick, collected around 100 items for Mustard Tree which works with the city’s homeless to improve their health and wellbeing and access much needed essentials such as food, clothes and toiletries whilst on the journey of improving their quality of life.

Staff donated throughout July and August and dropped the generous haul off to the Ancoats branch of charity for distribution. This relatively simple project provided much needed resources during a difficult time for most people with the increasing cost of living.

Harry Dwan, Fundraising and Advocacy Lead at Mustard Tree, said: “Food poverty has increased significantly across the country.  We currently have in excess of 1,000 service users accessing hot meals every week, just two years ago it was an average of 40 per week!”

“It now costs over £300k per year to provide our food related services whereas two years ago it cost in the region of £10k maximum.”

Jonathan Mallen-Beadle, Managing Director of Mears Living added: “During the next few months, with inflation at a record high and the impending rise in energy prices we are going to see many more families plunged into poverty as they choose whether to ‘eat or heat’.

“Mears Living is committed to supporting social value projects that help to alleviate some of the pain for our tenants and those in our communities and we’re continuing to look at what else we can do in the coming months.”
