First YEN Talks! event hailed great success

The first BCIA Young Engineers Network hosted a fantastic event at E.ON Control Solutions in Bury on Wednesday this week – the first of the network’s social events in the north of England, as well as the first YEN Talks! session.

Open Control Solution’s Jason Stirzaker led the session along with host BCIA YEN Chair, Greg Smith from E.ON Control Solutions.  Young engineers from across the north joined this first event that finished up with social time over pizza and beers.

Jason brought decades of experience in BMS/BEMS and welcomed the opportunity to share his experience at this first YEN Talks! session, designed to get young engineers talking, sharing challenges and co-creating solutions.

The first event was a great success, bringing together professionals in the BMS sector to discuss a range of important topics including the importance of IT/IP Networks information and training in BMS. There were also conversations around the challenges faced in day-to-day commissioning and the need for more thoughtful approaches to remote site access. Engineers at the event engaged in lively debates on topics such as IOT/MQTT vs traditional hard-wired networks, Modbus vs BACnet, frost protection strategies, packaged units, value engineering, LoRaWAN, and AHU basic theory. It was encouraging to see engineers of varying experience levels and positions within the industry coming together to share knowledge and insights.

The success of this first event has paved the way for future gatherings.  YEN Talks! will always be led by experienced industry professionals and will take place quarterly with the next scheduled for July 2024. Each YEN Talks! will cover a main topic alongside a general question time, where anything BEMS goes.

As part of an annual programme of learning and socials, BCIA YEN will hold its first event in the Midlands looking at Smart Building Concepts and hosted by Schneider Electric at their Innovation Campus in Coventry. Taking place on 20th June, places are strictly limited so reserve your place now BCIA – VeryConnect

The BCIA Young Engineers initiative is dedicated to fostering collaboration and professional development within the BMS sector, and looks forward to more engaging discussions and networking opportunities in the months to come.
