JLA Signs Deal to Tackle Microplastic Pollution in Commercial Laundry

JLA has signed an exclusive distribution agreement with Cleaner Seas, bringing innovative microplastic filtration technology to the commercial laundry industry.

The partnership will see JLA offer the INDIKON Large microplastic filter to customers operating commercial laundry facilities, helping organisations to capture synthetic fibres before they contribute to marine pollution.

Research suggests that up to 700,000 microfibres enter the waterways during a single wash cycle, with laundry wastewater the largest contributor of primary microplastic pollution in our seas, at 35%.

Developed by Cornwall-based Cleaner Seas, the INDIKON Large filter is designed specifically for commercial applications and is installed on outflow pipework, capturing synthetic fibres before they leave a building to prevent them from entering drainage systems and waterways.

Compatible with all existing commercial laundry equipment, the solution can be installed with minimal disruption to operations and requires no changes to wash programmes or user behaviour.

Filter cartridges will be returned to Cleaner Seas for the captured microplastics to be recycled, helping organisations take practical and measurable action to reduce their environmental impact.

As one of the UK’s leading providers of commercial laundry equipment and services, supporting more than 22,000 organisations nationwide, JLA is uniquely positioned to accelerate the adoption of microplastic filtration technology across sectors including higher education, student accommodation, hospitality and healthcare. The exclusive agreement with Cleaner Seas forms part of the company’s ongoing commitment to helping customers improve operational efficiency while supporting wider environmental and sustainability objectives.

Helen Buchan, Head of Product at JLA, said: “Microplastic pollution is an issue that is receiving increasing attention from policymakers, organisations and the public alike, but there is currently no mandate for using suitable filters in the commercial laundry sector. Through our partnership with Cleaner Seas, we’re now able to offer customers a practical solution that can make a measurable difference, without disrupting day-to-day operations.

“As organisations look for tangible ways to support their sustainability goals, we believe this technology has the potential to play an important role in reducing the environmental impact of the sector, to instead ensure we begin to make a positive difference to the planet.”

Dave Miller, CEO of Cleaner Seas, said: “This agreement represents a significant milestone for Cleaner Seas and our mission to tackle microplastic pollution at source, and at scale.

“JLA’s reach, expertise and established relationships across the commercial laundry sector make it the ideal partner to help significantly increase adoption of our technology and drive meaningful and measurable environmental impact.” Visit the JLA website to find out more.
