London Architectural Feat named ‘Best Tall Building in Europe’

An exemplary London development has been named Europe’s best tall building at The Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitats (CTBUH) Annual Conference in Chicago.

One Crown Place, a development by MTD Group, was designed by architects Kohn Pedersen Fox Associates (KPF) and delivered by global real estate advisor CBRE, acting as project manager and development manager.

Judges of the CTBUH Awards, which aim to highlight the industry’s stellar achievements in tall constructions across the world, praised the building for its ‘innovation’ and ‘advancement of the lives of occupiers’.

CBRE’s Senior Director of Development Management, Stuart Edwards, and KPF’s Principal Robert Whitlock were at the award ceremony to accept the award.

Stuart Edwards said: “It is a great honour to accept this prestigious award.

“We knew we were delivering an exceptional building with a rare diverse mix of residential, office, hotel and retail in a unique context. We had to overcome some highly challenging aspects of design to maximise the building’s potential. This accolade provides a world stamp of achievement and excellence, and it is especially gratifying when you see the quality amongst the shortlisted entries.

“This award also highlights how an experienced and well-balanced partnership between the client and the whole development team can achieve exceptional results.”

John Bushell, Design Principal for One Crown Place at KPF added: “We’re delighted with this result. KPF has long championed genuinely mixed-use developments, such as Hysan Place and Victoria Dockside in Hong Kong.

“With One Crown Place, we saw the opportunity to bring that vision to London. We wanted to ensure that each of the uses was the best it could be – uncompromised by the different requirements of other uses. One Crown Place is a testament to collaboration and the combined efforts of an incredibly strong team. From the start, MTD Group were totally committed to the vision of a mixed-use development, we are very proud to have shaped that vision into this landmark building, expertly managed by CBRE with construction delivered in an exemplary fashion by Mace.”

Aiman Hussein, Director, at MTD said: “This is a major achievement for MTD Group and we would like to thank KPF and CBRE as well as the One Crown Place Project team for exceeding our expectations and delivering a landmark scheme to the highest standards. This is borne out of the benefits of “One Team” culture and an incredible vision from everyone involved.”

The building’s design is a blend of historic buildings which adjoin a pair of iconic residential towers which have been designed to give a multi-aspect-views across the city to the 246 apartments within. There is a six-floor podium section featuring high-quality office space, and there is a variety of retail units at ground level. The development also has a boutique hotel and 40-cover fine-dining restaurant which occupy a restored Georgian terrace on Sun Street.
